Fashion lovers’ favorite time of the year is coming soon. A red carpet filled with sculpted gowns, tailored suits, and meticulously constructed looks light up the night in a historic New York City Museum. Founded in 1948, the Met Gala is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art that is widely considered “fashion's biggest night.” Looks from A-list attendees are often talked about for years afterward, like Tyla in a dress made from sand by Balmain in 2024 and Zendaya in her chainmail Versace look from 2018.

This year's gala is co-chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour. Wintour, the CEO of Vogue, has chaired the event for the last thirty years and is in charge of overseeing the exclusive guest list. The gala will take place on Monday, May 4th.

The Met recently announced its theme for the 2026 event as “Costume Art,” which Vogue author, Christian Allaire, defines as “the intimate connection between clothing, the human body, and art history, celebrating fashion as a vital art form by displaying garments alongside artworks across The Met's collections.”

What does this mean? It's an idea that clothing is a connection to life. The human body has been represented through fashion in many different ways.

Many people, fashion fanatics and onlookers alike, are asking the same question: what should we expect to see from this year's gala?

There are many designers whose pieces reflect the theme and stand out as natural contenders for the event. Robert Wun’s Fall/Winter 2024 Haute couture collection embodies the focus of this year's Gala. Through his iconic looks, he portrayed the four stages of life and the human body–the skin, the muscle, the skeleton, and, most notably, the soul.

Robert Wun is a Hong Kong-born, London-based fashion designer known for his avant-garde and intricate designs. In 2023, Wun became the first Hong Kong designer to debut at Paris Haute Couture week. His elaborate crystal-based designs with intricate pleating took the media by storm. He has since been worn by many A-listers like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, and Celine Dion.

Other talented designers flooded into New York Fashion Week, which took place from February 11th to 16th of this year. Designer Christian Siriano created a more ready-to-wear collection. This could be an inspiration for the Galas attendees that tend to go for more sculpted, simplified looks that still catch the eye and live up to the gala’s glamour requirements. Ready-to-wear pieces are different from couture because they have more accessible and affordable materials, and would be sold more affordably than couture.

AP news reports that Siriano had 48 hours to create his final dress for the show. He ended up creating a dress that fits the theme for the gala because it defies typical human body shapes seen in dresses with its billowing, non-form fitting shape. It celebrates life with its vibrant colors and flowing shapes.

Overall, the annual Met Gala is a highly anticipated event that will captivate fashion lovers from all over the world. No matter how the theme is interpreted by the designers, the outcome will be artistry none the less. Embodying life while weaving it into designs to truly show that fashion is art is the Gala's focus this year. Fashion experts and lovers of the gala alike are looking forward to the amazing looks and designs that will be presented this year.
